State’s education chief favors tax hike to boost teacher pay, help schools. Please see related story

Arizona’s top schools administrator, Diane Douglas, campaigned on repealing Common Core standards and took office in 2015.

She says her focus has been on developing Arizona standards for Arizona students, higher level math standards and effectively running the state education department.

The Star met with Douglas last week while she was in Tucson to participate in an education conference and host public forums. We asked her about some key education issues. Her responses were edited for clarity and length:

Arizona Department of Education Superintendent Diane Douglas will host a “We Are Listening Tour” from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 19 at the Holbrook Unified School District, 1000 N. 8th Ave., Holbrook, in the district board room.

As part of Diane Douglas’ We Are Listening Tour, the Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction will be at Hopi Mission School in Kykotsmovi tonight from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

She plans to discuss the initiatives proposed in her “AZ Kids Can’t Wait!” plan, which includes support for teacher retention and a reduction of standardized testing.

2016 ‘We Are Listening Tour’ comes to Page on Sept. 20

The 2016 “We Are Listening” Tour will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the Cultural Arts Center, 660 S. Navajo Drive, Page.

The 2016 “We Are Listening” Tour will include public meetings on all topics concerning K-12 education. The meetings will run from May through December of 2016. Not all dates are listed at this time and will be posted as venues confirm availability.

‘We Are Listening Tour’ comes to Northern Arizona

Arizona Superintendent of Education Diane Douglas and other officials had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the challenges and opportunities facing education in Northern Arizona when the “We Are Listening Tour” arrived on June 13 at Coconino High School.

A crowd of about 50 parents, teachers, school administrators and members of the public came out early on Saturday morning for the presentation.

Sitting on the panel with Douglas were Rep. Bob Thorp (R-District 6) and Carol Lippert, associate superintendent of the AZ ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development).
