Navajo commission to assess school abuse. See more state education news here

FLAGSTAFF — The Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission will be holding several public hearings to assess the mistreatment of Native Americans in schools on and off the reservation.

The commission wants parents, guardians and students in kindergarten through 12th grade to speak out about any mistreatment they have received from school personnel. Signed written testimony also will be accepted.

For several decades, teachers abused Native American children at federally run boarding schools for speaking their language or singing their songs.

Opinion: Arizona Assessment Law is Troubling News for Students

Earlier this year, Arizona’s governor signed into law a bill that will allow school districts to discontinue use of the state’s 3rd grade through high school assessment, AzMERIT. AzMERIT, which was designed to measure students growth on Arizona’s new college- and career-ready standards, replaced Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) as the state’s measure of student achievement two years ago. …

The new law was sold to legislators and the public as a measure to cut duplicative assessments and decrease time spent on test prep. In reality, it is unlikely to do either.

Bill would allow AZ parents to ‘opt out’ of statewide school assessments

Would you want your child taking a test at school you know he or she would fail? A Republican state lawmaker wants to give parents the choice of opting out of statewide achievement tests.

Supporters say the bill is designed to restore parental rights, but critics say it could hamper the state’s ability to identify struggling schools and could potentially cost the state millions.

What’s most valuable – standards mastery or college readiness?

More states are considering replacing annual statewide assessments that measure mastery of academic standards like Arizona’s AZMerit, with those that measure students’ college readiness like the ACT or SAT.

The ACT or SAT is now the statewide assessment for high school students in 14 states, and that number is expected to grow to 22 states this year, according to an article in The Christian Science Monitor.

Education leaders say both types of assessments provide crucial insights into students’ academic knowledge, performance and growth.
