The 2021 Flagstaff Festival of Science kicked off this past Friday with the W. L. Gore Keynote Presentation: “When Stones Speak: Decoding the Messages Embedded in Ancient Maya Monuments” with Dr. Jaime Awe of Northern Arizona University.

Children building bird nests and digging through mud to build structures, peering through microscopes and telescopes and finally looking up to skies in awe as they watch a fleet of bottle rockets take flight — all this could be found during the annual Flagstaff Festival of Science’s “Science in the Park” event held Sept. 21 at Wheeler Park near downtown Flagstaff.

More than 50 organizations, including Lowell Observatory, the Museum of Northern Arizona and the Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth, took part in the annual event providing hands-on demonstrations large and small. Young people had the chance to climb onboard large earth moving equipment, practice their fire fighting skills with a mini fire hose, watch a Lunar Rover replica robot cruise around the park.

More Flagstaff Festival of Science events are scheduled through Sept. 29.
