Succeeding academically once they enroll, and completing a degree are often hindered by the circumstances these students have to face, like working full-time when enrolled or caring for other family members. These students also don’t have the benefit of drawing from their parents’ college-going experience.

Third in a series on teachers and what they do during the summer: The day before Sun Valley High School summer school students’ research papers were due, Moonstone Yoga’s Jennifer Shifler led them and their teacher through breathing and yoga exercises to help them reduce stress and relax.
For the past three years, Shifler has led sessions each Friday morning before tutoring begins at the Title I charter school in Mesa, and educators and administrators there say it has helped increase students’ concentration, their ability to monitor their emotions and develop positive responses to stressful situations.

It’s that time of year again, when students beg for school supplies featuring their favorite Disney character, and parents and teachers panic at the cost.
And this year in Arizona, as students return to school after a year that ended in a historic educator walkout, the issue of school supplies has gotten seriously political.

U of A Cooperative Extension have excess of supplies for schools
The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension in Flagstaff has an excess of supplies and learning materials for local schools.
“On the supplies side, we have a lot of 3-ring binders, but more things are being uncovered everyday,” said Emily Melhorn of AmeriCorps. “We also have a several larger maps on Arizona – Precipitation, Slope Map, Major Lakes and Rivers, Vegetation, Watersheds, Water Management, and Invasive Species. We thought these could be useful to a biology or earth sciences class.” …
Suddenlink, Chamber prepare for ‘Flagstaff Teachers Supply Drive’ Aug. 5 through 8
Final preparations are being made for the upcoming Flagstaff Teachers Supply Drive.
“All systems are go for the fourth annual Suddenlink / Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce Teachers Supply Drive on August 5-8, taking place at Sam’s Club and the two Walmart stores,” said Regina Salas, executive assistant to the president and CEO of the chamber.
“Check out the video promoting Teachers Supply Drive. Banners and signs are up at the three locations,” she said.
Sponsored by Suddenlink and the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, the drive will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 5 through 7 and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 8.
Sam’s Club has already started to accept supply donations. The Walmart stores will receive cash donations.
“Your support will go a long way,” Salas said.
