FUSD to begin capital projects after issuing $25 million in bonds. See more local education news here

Flagstaff Unified School District’s bank account just increased by $25 million, following the sale of the first set of $75 million in bonds approved by voters in November.

The funds from the sale were deposited in the Coconino County Treasurer’s Office last week and will the district to move forward with its renovation projects and technology initiative.

The new school year begins Aug. 1 and that means school registration is right around the corner. 

Registration for new and returning students will be held from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 25-26 at Tusayan Town Hall and June 27-28 at the school’s multipurpose room.

Kaibab Learning Center gets high marks in annual evaluation

At the close of nearly a year-long process, the Kaibab Learning Center has improved its standing with the evaluating organization, director Michelle Pahl said. KLC, which was previously operating under a two-star rating, received a 4.73 star rating in this year’s evaluation.

The annual evaluation by Quality First marks the first time KLC has been rated so highly, which Pahl said would not have happened without donations, most of which went into teacher salaries.

“The community has been so generous in supporting us,” Pahl said. “Because of their support, we’ve been able to hire more teachers, which helped push us toward that five-star rating.”

Last year Grand Canyon School (GCS) had two new administrators, six new teachers and was implementing a new curriculum.

This year the school begins the year with an all-time low in staff turnover, two new administrators promoted within the school and moving forward with implementing the Beyond Textbooks curriculum.

After replacing almost a third of the staff in the 2014-2015 school year and losing a principal halfway through the school year, GCS administration decided it was time to implement changes in school leadership.

Kaibab Learning Center’s (KLC) nine-week summer camp is all about themes; patriotic, cultural, community, nature, space, music, culinary… you name it, they’ve got it.

Starting May 30 – July 28 KLC will offer a full time and part time summer camp for children from Grand Canyon, Tusayan, Valle and all visitors to the Canyon.

Kaibab Learning Center gets $40,000 from town council

As one of the only licensed childcare center in a 75 mile radius, Kaibab Learning Center (KLC) is an essential part of the Grand Canyon and Tusayan communities.

In the past the center has relied primarily on fundraising efforts to meet its financial needs. During the Jan. 20 Tusayan Town Council meeting, council members voted to contribute $30,000 in requested assistance and approved an additional $10,000 for the center.

Michelle Pahl, the new director at Kaibab Learning Center (KLC) at Grand Canyon, was a stay at home mom with three kids before she took on the job of director at the center…. Pahl said the position was exactly what she was looking for and as an extra bonus two of her three children attend KLC.
