With the November elections coming up, Coconino Community College has been working to get the word out on their proposed property tax override.

Proposition 410 will be on the Nov. 8 ballot asking voters to help the college fund programs for vocational skills and replenish staff numbers through a property tax increase.

An endorsement of the proposition from the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce recently came on the heels of CCC’s 25th anniversary celebration.

“The chamber has weighed in on that and will be advocating for its passage,” said Stuart McDaniel, vice president of government affairs at the chamber. “Education, and especially workforce development, is something that the chamber is very much in support of.”

FUSD: New Coding Program Engages Kindergartners

Last month was the kick off of a new Kindergarten Coding program put on by the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with FUSD. Kindergarten teacher Kelly Fischer hosted the inaugural program in her classroom for three 30 minute lessons.

For the first two days the kids worked through one hour of coding curriculum on iPads learning the basic principle of coding using algorithms and events to create simple lines of code and reactions. Students where excited and engaged throughout the three days and when faced with these new challenges overcame them with persistence and enthusiasm. On the final day they played unplugged (no iPads) games that reinforce what they have been learning. The program ended with each student receiving a certificate of completion and lots of high fives.

May is National Teacher Appreciation Month, and part of the Chamber’s recognition includes this month’s cover subject, Diana Schweitzer. Ms. Schweitzer retired from FUSD after 22 years with the district, and she speaks in glowing terms about her relationships with students, administration, and the business community at large, which she calls ‘her greatest teaching asset.’
