On Thursday, about 10,000 students in Flagstaff went to their first day of school for the 2018-19 school year.

It was the opening day for 13 of 15 Flagstaff Unified School District schools, with the exception of modified year-round schools Killip Elementary and Leupp Public School.

Education on Parade at Flagstaff 4th of July celebration

Supporters of the Flagstaff Unified School District and other educational groups took part in the 2018 Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce 4th of July Parade.

“Thank you to all who walked with FUSD and to all who cheered us on,” FUSD officials reported on Wednesday. “It was a wonderful morning!  #FUSDpride”

More than 20,000 spectators watched more than 120 floats, classic automobiles, horses and goats, dancers and a marching band on Wednesday.

Horrified after the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida, an Arizona father took it upon himself to try and improve safety for kids at schools. 

John Birdsell, who lives in Flagstaff, started a company called School Security Solutions and designed a school desk made with bullet-resistant fiberglass.
