Before the House Education Committee began on Monday, Feb. 10, people shared what brought them there – concerns about services and support for low-income students, how ACES – adverse childhood experiences – impact students and the Project Rocket pilot expansion to help students in low performing schools.

At the meeting, House Education Committee members discussed 13 bills that would affect students, teachers and staff in Arizona’s elementary through high schools.

Melinda McKinney is highly involved with STEM initiatives in Flagstaff. As an instructor of Biology, Physics and Mathematics at Coconino Community College she inspires students through her courses and lectures. Outside of the classroom she organizes camps, workshops, and activities that promote science and enhance public knowledge on a variety of topics. Melinda is on the board of the Flagstaff Festival of Science as a primary organizer for Coconino Community College’s involvement in workshops.

Dr. Alice Christie has dedicated her life to serving others. Currently in her 54th year as an educator, she taught in the K-12 arena for 20+ years, was a professor of education at Arizona State University for 20+ years and spent 9 years traveling to 37 states to provide STEM education workshops to over 5000 PK-12 teachers. In 2017, she founded and self-funded Tynkertopia, Inc. (a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in Flagstaff.

Christie, founder of Tynkertopia in Flagstaff, was named a finalist in the 2020 Viola Awards in the Excellence in Arts Education category)

CCC&Y board approves new Action and Outreach Initiatives for 2020-2021

The board of the Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth voted on Jan. 27 to approve a series of Policy Initiatives for 2020-21.

The policies cover education, child welfare, environmental equity, incarcerated parents / justice reform and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

CCC&Y is a non-partisan organization that supports an educated and engaged voting population that participates in our democratic process.

FLAGSTAFF — The Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth will hold its next monthly board meeting from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27 at the County Health and Community Services Building, 2625 N. King St., Ponderosa Room, Flagstaff.

The board will be approving the Coalition’s Action and Outreach initiatives at the meeting.

ALL are welcome to attend the Coalition’s monthly board meeting and join in the discussion.

Jody Laura has created a music program that introduces kids to music at the youngest of ages! This may seem like a “throw away” age for music education, but Jody is teaching kids in a way that is really making a difference and is showing all of us involved how important music education really can be this young. She has everything from newborns to 4 year olds in her classes. This past summer, Little Music Makers also offered a Big Kids Rock weeklong summer camp for slightly older kids. Through Little Music Makers of Flagstaff, she has written and developed a curriculum that changes every 8 weeks.

Education Spotlight: Puente de Hozho Awarded $11,650 from U.S. Soccer Foundation. See more local education news here

Puente de Hozho Elementary (on Jan. 7) announced it has been awarded a $11,650 grant from the U.S. Soccer Foundation, whose programs serve as the national model for sports-based youth development in underserved communities. This grant is intended to fund professional grade outdoor soccer court that will be available for community use. Puente de Hozho was one of nine organizations to receive grants.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of the U.S. Soccer Foundation,” said Principal Robert Kelty. “This furthers our efforts in providing world class academic and athletic opportunities for our students and community.”

As a community tri-lingual school supporting learners in the areas of Navajo, Spanish, and English, Puente de Hozho seeks to create cultural bridges between students and there is no better way for those connections than through the world’s most popular sport – soccer.
