2018 Flagstaff Early Childhood Fair makes successful entry to Flagstaff Festival of Science

Hundreds of parents and children streamed into the Commons area of Flagstaff High School for the 8th Flagstaff Early Childhood Fair held on June 29.

The fair, which was traditionally held during the Spring, was moved to the Fall to coincide with the annual Flagstaff Festival of Science (Sept. 21 through 30).

Science in the Park helps kick off 2018 Flagstaff Festival of Science

Even before the official opening time of 10 a.m., young people at Wheeler Park in Flagstaff were busy peeking at a variety of science experiments, climbing onboard heavy construction equipment and running from table to table to view science exhibits during the 2018 Science in the Park held Sept. 22.

The 2018 Flagstaff Festival of Science, “Accelerating into the Future,” continues through Sept. 30 at various locations in Flagstaff.

New this year to the festival will be the Flagstaff Early Childhood Fair — “Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead!,” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at at Flagstaff High School, 400 W. Elm St., Flagstaff.

Flagstaff Festival of Science begins with Keynote Presentation on Sept. 21, Science in the Park on Sept. 22

The 2018 Flagstaff Festival of Science, “Accelerating into the Future,” will explore the astounding changes our lives may take in the next few years. 

The FREE, award-winning 10-day Festival, Sept. 21 – 30, 2018, will showcase signature events such as Science in the Park (10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at Wheeler Park, 212 W. Aspen Ave., Flagstaff) and SCI Talks, as well as field trips, guided interpretive hikes, archaeological digs, hands-on workshops, panel discussions and presentations.

The W. L. Gore & Associates Keynote Presentation: “Self Driving Vehicles: Accelerating into the Future,” features Raj Rajkumar, Ph.D., professor of Electrical/ Computer Engineering, at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 at NAU’s Ardrey Auditorium. 

Free tickets at the door for first-come, first served. Or pick up or print out tickets in advance through the NAU Central Ticket Office (nau.edu/cto; 928-523-5661).

FACTS ‘Lights On’ Carnival draws a crowd at Flagstaff’s Bushmaster Park

Hundreds of families returned to the open air, enjoyed the warm weather, played carnival games, rode a miniature train and gained valuable educational lessons during the annual FACTS “Lights On” Carnival held Sept. 8 at Bushmaster Park in Flagstaff.

The carnival was moved last year to Sinagua Middle School due to rainy skies.

Education on display at 2018 Coconino County Fair

Students from dozens of local schools participated in the 69th Annual Coconino County Fair held Aug. 31 through Sept. 3, 2018 at the fairgrounds at Fort Tuthill County Park.

Public elementary, middle and high school; charter school and home-school students countywide submitted a variety of entries, which filled the entire Schools exhibit building.

The Fredonia-Moccasin Unified School District held its annual Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, Aug. 14. More than 70 backpacks were given to students by Flagstaff and Page representatives from the Coconino County Public Health Services District (CCPHSD), which also provided information on dental and health care.

Other participates staffing tables in front of the gymnasium were the Coconino Coalition for Children and Youth and the health districts’s Tobacco and Chronic Disease Prevention Program in Page.

Williams Unified celebrates 2018 Back-to-School Fair. More events to come countywide

Parents and students gathered in the Williams Elementary-Middle School Gymnasium to register during the Williams Unified School District Back-to-School Registration Fair on July 23-24. By the end of the first day, most of the backpacks had been handed out, as families received a variety of school supplies provided by Coconino County agencies and area non profits.

More back-to-school school fairs are scheduled in Flagstaff, Fredonia and elsewhere in Coconino County.
