Strengthening Families in Kaibab Paiute

As their children’s first and best teacher, Tosh and her boyfriend, Derrick, know the importance of laying a strong foundation early in their children’s lives. Earlier this year, Tosh signed up for the Growing Up Great parent education classes offered at the Kaibab Early Learning Center near Fredonia. The program covers topics on bonding and attachment, caring for your family, social and emotional development and physical and brain development.

FUSD provides information at community meeting on school safety

After a recent series of threatening telephone calls to a number of schools within the Flagstaff Unified School District, the district and the Flagstaff Police Department presented a community meeting on school safety on April 21 at Flagstaff High School, an event attended by more than 600 parents, educators and community members. During the program, the district presented the handout “Talking Points for Students” to help parents, teachers and students open the conversation about the recent lockdowns. Fredonia’s Future Educators Association going to Nationals

Fredonia’s Future Educators Association traveled to Tuscon on March 2-4, to compete in this year’s state competition.

All of the students did very well and a few students will represent Fredonia at the FEA National competition in Washington, D.C. in April.

The group consisted of nine students who are all taking Early Childhood Education at Fredonia High School and their advisor, Jeanne Crookston. The group was excited to compete against other students from across Arizona. They had a good time and learned a great deal.

NAU lab brings language skills to Flagstaff kids

NAU’s Child Development and Language Lab is developing programs for use by Head Start preschool and grade school teachers. The lab, which is part of NAU’s Institute for Human Development, is run by Trina Spencer, a language intervention and assessment researcher. Spencer works closely with a team of undergraduate and graduate students who join her at area schools to do language skill work with young students.
