NAU President José Luis Cruz Rivera testified (March 2) in front of a House subcommittee about the critically important work that Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and other Minority Serving Institutions do to increase economic mobility and equitable postsecondary educational value and how the United States can better support that work.
Cruz Rivera, himself a product of HSIs, testified in the Higher Education and Workforce Investment Subcommittee hearing on “Investing in Economic Mobility: The Important Role of Hispanic Serving Institutions and Other Minority Serving Institutions.” He advocated for increased investments in HSIs— because of who these institutions serve, how well they serve them, and the individual and collective benefits these investments can generate for the people of the United States of America.

The Coconino County Board of Supervisors has appointed Cheryl Mango-Paget as Coconino County Superintendent of Schools effective immediately.
Mango-Paget has served as the Associate Superintendent for Coconino County since 2012, holds a certificate to teach in schools in the state of Arizona, and holds Arizona administrator and superintendent certifications. Mango-Paget has classroom experience as a teacher and administrator, and expertise and passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Education (STEM).
“I’m honored to serve Coconino County as the Superintendent of Schools,” said Mango-Paget. “Education is my passion and I look forward to continuing to improve the educational outcomes for our students and training for our teachers. Our future is built on the success we have educating the children and young adults of our county.”

Each year, the Coconino County Superintendent of Schools office holds a Teacher of the Year, Rookie Teacher of the Year and Ambassadors for Excellence Awards Event, but due to COVID-19, the 2020-2021 event will not be held. The School Superintendent’s Office hopes to continue the annual tradition in the future.

Governing Board seats will be voted on during the General Election on November 3, 2020.

The Coconino County Board of Supervisors selected Dr. Tommy Lewis as the new Superintendent of Schools. The Board confirmed the appointment during the regular Board meeting on Nov. 5 and Dr. Lewis will begin his service on Nov. 18.
Dr. Lewis replaces Dr. Risha VanderWey, who began serving as the Tuba City School District Superintendent in August. Dr. Lewis’ term runs until Dec. 31, 2020. A primary and general election will be held in 2020 for a new term beginning in 2021.

Grand Canyon Unified School District Governing Board – one seat is vacant.
Fredonia Moccasin Unified School District Governing Board – three seats are vacant.
Coconino Association for Vocations, Industry, and Technology (CAVIAT) Education District in Page and Fredonia – one seat in each district is vacant.
Maine Consolidated School District Governing Board – two seats are vacant.
Applicants must be Arizona registered voters and residents of the school district for at least one year prior to the date of appointment. Applicants or their spouses cannot be an employee of the district.
