(Tod) Gilmore sees his initial tenure here as three 100-day periods. The first 100 days he has spent “getting to know the Fredonia way.”

Essentially observing and learning how things are done, and why. He asks, “Do we do things the way we’ve always done because it’s the best and proven way to do something? Or is it an inertia issue that we need to look at as a community?”

Gilmore believes graduates of FHS should know they have no limits, should know what their dreams are, and be equipped to actualize those dreams. He feels this is a virtue of being a smaller high school, “we have an incredible ability to really know our students, and the smaller class sizes can be very powerful if we take advantage of it.”

Education Spotlight: STAR 6th Graders Attend Camp Colton

Earlier this month the STAR school sixth grade had the chance to attend Camp Colton, a camp owned and operated by Flagstaff Unified School District that is dedicated to teaching participants about environmental science. The students spent four days and three nights at camp and attended environmental education classes such as forestry, aquatics, wildlife and geology, taught by Camp Colton’s staff.
Each environmental education class was designed to get the students to interact with their natural environment and work as a team to accomplish a specific goal. For example, the Geology class consisted of the students exploring the nearby Lava Tubes and discussing the different types of igneous rock present inside the tubes.

After more than 40 years as a beloved outdoor learning center for northern Arizona’s sixth graders, Camp Colton is modernizing, starting with its curriculum.

This month, educational staff members at the 44-acre camp tucked into the western slope of the San Francisco Peaks have been piloting new forest health lessons for use in the coming school year. Educational programs are one component of a 50-year master plan that the team has been developing for the last year. The plan features forestry plots in areas of differently spaced trees, cabins to replace platform tents, preservation of the stream that runs through the property, expansion of the historic lodge and more.
