Governor Vetoed SB1456, which would have affected not only sexual education curriculum, but all learning materials in the classroom and make it harder for LGBTQ kids to see themselves in school curriculum.

Senate Bill (SB)1783 is a direct attack on the Invest in Education Act. This bill creates a tax evasion scheme for large corporations to divert $527 million from #INVESTinED dollars back into the hands of the wealthy. Voters approved INVESTinED because we believe in our students and educators and SB1783 undermines the will of the voters and cuts education funding.

SB1783 already passed in the Senate and is being heard in House Ways and Means Committee on March 24. 

We’ve heard that legislator’s email inboxes are overwhelmed and that calling is the best way to lobby them now. We need you to start calling your Representatives to stop SB1783!

Arizona Education Association (AEA) Legislative Update

Last week, Senate Education Committee passed two bills along party lines that will harm public education – SB1400 and SB1683. SB1400 will require school districts offer course equivalency credits for alternative methods such as organized sports and community arts. SB1683 would take $10 million from the general fund to provide transportation grants for charter schools. Both bills take away local control and distract lawmakers from the priority of restoring full funding to our public schools.

SB1452 would expand the state’s private school voucher program to over 800,000 students in Arizona, diverting millions from public schools to private schools without any accountability. This bill passed in Senate Education Committee this week and will go to Rules committee next before heading to the Senate floor for a final vote. Contact your senator and ask him or her to oppose SB1452.

AEA has reviewed the Governor’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 Executive Education Budget Proposal, a $12.3 billion package where education continued to be touted as the top priority issue. Governor Doug Ducey has outlined his funding priorities for FY2021 and now must negotiate with the Arizona Legislature to finalize the budget.
