Cassandra has taught elementary school in New Zealand and Japan and holds a B.Bus in Management and M.A. in Experiential Education. She is Willow Bend Environmental Education Center’s Education Director and lead science teacher.

Educator Highlight: Betsy Hamill — Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy (FALA)

Betsy Hamill is a dynamic teacher of African dance and world music here in Flagstaff, Arizona. Hamill’s background includes extensive musical training from Carnegie Mellon University, where her focus was on the French Horn, and the California institute of the Arts where she received a BFA in World Music with a focus on Ewe Drumming and Dance from Ghana. …

For the past 6 years Betsy Hamill has served as Co-Director at the Center for Indigenous Music along with her husband Chad. She also teaches multiple music and dance classes at the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy (FALA). She has established the FALA World Music Ensemble, the FALA Action Band (FAB) and a retro jazzy fun music group called Falunk. Her classes at FALA are so popular that there are waiting lists for students to get in.

Educator Highlight: Sheila White of Marshall Magnet Elementary School receives 2017 Viola Award for Excellence in Arts Education

Sheila White makes her impression on the Flagstaff music community as both an educator and a community musician. She is currently the general music, world drumming, and beginning band instructor at Marshall Magnet Elementary School (MMES). She also plays in the Flagstaff Community Band and works as the Orchestra Manager for Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra (FSO), as well as performing as a member of the clarinet section.

Ms. White’s impact on MMES students goes far beyond the music program. She is the creator of the 2016 Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program at MMES. This school-wide program was developed to define, implement, and evaluate a multi-tiered system of support which includes proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create a positive school environment. Additionally, her special education dual certification and dedication to parental involvement makes her an irreplaceable asset at MMES.

Educator Highlight: Leslie Baker — Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy

Leslie Baker is a dancer, teacher, choreographer and creative artist. She has been teaching at Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy (FALA) for the last 15 years. There, she currently teaches 6 classes: Jazz dance, levels 1, 2 & 3; Modern 1; Tap dance; and Dance Through Time (dance history) to Middle and High School students. Ms. Baker often recreates and teaches students original choreography by masters such as Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins.
