Coming Summer 2019! BioBlitz Activity for Summer Learning Programs
Get your summer program kids outside this summer to count bugs, study plants, and understand their communities. A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. At a BioBlitz, scientists, families, students, teachers, and other community members work together to get a snapshot of an area’s biodiversity. These events can happen in most any geography-urban, rural, or suburban-right around your summer learning program! Just pick a day this summer and use the free tools from National Geographic to conduct your local BioBlitz. Your students will contribute to science in a meaningful way. Smartphone technologies and apps such as iNaturalist make collecting photographs and biological information about living things easy as part of a BioBlitz. High quality data uploaded to iNaturalist become part of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, an open source database used by scientists and policy makers around the world.
Engage Partners

The BioBlitz is a great way to invite partners to work with your summer program. Invite scientists and naturalists to come observe and analyze species during the BioBlitz. Here’s a recruitment video.
