Science in the pines: Maine Consolidated begins new agriculture-science program

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Maine Consolidated School District (MCSD) added a new agriculture-science program to their curriculum this year. The program incorporates gardening, small animal husbandry, sustainability and technology.

“We’re trying to get the kids to think about where their food actually comes from,” said MCSD fourth grade teacher Rick Zink.

Zink spent the summer working at the school developing the infrastructure for the project. He installed gutters and set a 2,500-gallon tank in place for a rain-catchment water system. He also installed posts, fencing and gates to enclose a 700-foot agricultural area.

“I wanted to do it well and look professional,” Zink said. “I’m hoping this will be here a long time.”
