San Francisco de Asis students will begin their final year in the school’s downtown Flagstaff location Wednesday morning.

After that, a prime city block will become open to redevelopment.

When the upcoming school year ends, students will begin school at the new location on Ponderosa Parkway atop McMillan Mesa, where the church already holds services, parish officials said.

“The goal is to move over next summer,” said Michael Vollmer, the adult formation director for the parish. “Teachers have been slowly going through their classrooms to see what they want to bring with them next year.”

Vollmer said the Diocese of Phoenix, which governs the parish and school, is in charge of selling the school’s old campus on Humphreys Street and Cherry Avenue.

Diocese spokesman Rob DeFrancesco said the sale of the school is in the early phases of negotiation, and the diocese has not identified the potential buyer or a plan for what will happen to the old campus once it is sold.

DeFrancesco said the diocese plans to sell the school building after the upcoming school year.
