No automatic failure for Arizona 3rd-graders who can’t read

Data from the state’s new AzMerit is not expected to be available to schools until after the start of the next school year

Third-graders who can’t read could still get promoted to the fourth grade this year because new academic data is delayed, the Arizona State Board of Education decided Monday.

But educators must still review reading scores and give remedial reading instruction to third-graders who need it.

Last school year about 650 third-graders were eligible to be held back under Arizona’s “Move On When Reading Law” because they failed to pass the reading portion of the Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards, or AIMS, test.
