New State-Wide Test Selected Supporting Higher Academic Standards

| November 3, 2014

Arizona’s State Board of Education has just selected a new statewide test that will support Arizona’s higher academic standards and give parents, students, and teachers important information about how our kids are doing. Arizona’s Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching, or AzMERIT, will replace the AIMS test for English Language Arts and Math for students in grades three through high school.

The new test will challenge students to think critically when responding to questions and to do more than just fill in the bubbles on a test score sheet. Last spring, Arizona had the opportunity to practice this new kind of test by participating in the PARCC field test. While PARCC is not the vendor for our new test, the new vendor, American Institute for Research (AIR), will deliver a similar test specific to Arizona and tell us how Arizona students are doing in comparison to other states across the country.

This change is essential to making sure Arizona’s students are on track for success in college and the workforce.

What is AzMERIT?

Arizona’s Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching

The Arizona State Board of Education adopted a new statewide achievement test, AzMERIT, for Arizona students. In order to help communicate the purpose of the new test and several important aspects of the upcoming implementation process, the Arizona Department of Education has created a series of helpful resources to guide all stakeholders. Please check this page often as we will regularly be adding new resources including vendor-specific documents.

For more information regarding the selection and RFP process, please visit the State Board of Education’s website.

The following series of documents (The Basics) is designed to give educators, students, parents, and members of the public more information about what a new statewide assessment means for Arizona. Materials will be updated regularly.
