Mindfulness Spotlight: Common Humanity

| June 9, 2020

Current national and global circumstances bring up complicated emotions for all of us. Kabat- Zinn defines mindfulness as paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, with an attitude of non-judgment. Especially in this time of high emotion, it is essential to provide ourselves moments to notice our feelings without judgment.

Emotions like anger or sadness, although uncomfortable, must be perceived and acknowledged. These emotions not only connect us to ourselves but the whole of humanity.  Suffering is part of our shared human experience.

Recognizing pain in ourselves or our world provides us an opportunity to share compassion with ourselves and others. Our empathy is often accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering. With a strong desire, anything is possible, especially when enacted in collaboration with others.

Collectively, Coconino Coalition for Children and Youth promotes mindfulness as a personal tool to reduce our pain and expand our capacity to share compassion, especially when we don’t have full control of all other circumstances.

We invite you to visit www.coconinokids.org/prevention to participate in a short webinar or two on resilience and mindfulness. Consider them our gift to you. What you do with them will be your gift to others. And, for that, we thank you in advance!
