Many people swear they cannot start their day without a fresh cup of coffee, but what happens to the thousands of ground-up beans used to make the daily pick-me-up?
Through a partnership with McDonald’s, students at Mount Elden Middle School are learning that coffee beans can be good for purposes other than fueling sleepy people.
The students are using donated coffee grounds to enhance the soil in the school’s garden. Maureen Knowles-Short, a teacher at MEMS, said the school has not had a functioning garden in about two years, but hopes the work on the soil will get it going again.
