Kinsey to become a magnet school

Flagstaff Unified School District will have a new magnet school in the fall.

At the end of this academic year, Kinsey Elementary School will be renamed Kinsey Inquiry and Discovery School — or K.I.D.S. for short. The K.I.D.S. mission will be to provide learning experiences inspired by the environment and cultures of northern Arizona.

“We had this opportunity and the staff just took it,” said Kinsey Principal Todd Kissick.

Kinsey fifth-grade teacher Joe Caslin presented the vision for the K.I.D.S. magnet school to the FUSD Governing Board Tuesday. It will be based on four core values: wonder, integrity, collaboration and engagement. The curriculum will adhere to Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards, but will do so using place-based learning, which is an experiential-style education model that uses the schoolyard, natural spaces, community members and local organizations to give context and meaning to classroom learning.

“It realizes and utilizes the community at large to provide learning experiences and connections,” Caslin said.
