It’s FASFA Season!

| January 11, 2016

AzCAN Communications:

The 2016-17 FAFSA season is open!  Are you prepared to guide students through the form, including the creation of an FSA ID?   The U.S. Department of Education provides tips and resources to assist in the process.  College Goal FAFSA, a statewide initiative to assist families and provide timely financial aid information, also offers a host of resources including dates and times for local FAFSA events.

Just-in-Time Training: Financial Aid

Just in time for FAFSA season is an online course designed to help you update your skills on financial aid processes, completing the FAFSA, and preparing college applications.  Register now for AzCAN’s College Access Professional (CAP) Training Module: Financial Aid and College Applications, a six-week course beginning February 1.  Cost is $50.

Please note that for the month of January, AzCAN will offer half priced modules ($25) to community based organizations. Contact Shaylinn Mayo for more information or to register.

FAFSA in the Fall

Beginning October 1, 2016 students will have the ability to complete their “Fall FAFSA” application using prior-prior year income information, just a few months after they or their parents file their taxes. Filing the FAFSA in the fall, using the tax information already completed in April, also means that students will be able to immediately use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT). Currently, students can only import their tax information from the IRS DRT if their taxes (or their parents’) have been complete for more than two weeks. Allowing students to complete their FAFSA early provides benefits such as more informed decision making regarding where to apply to college and financial aid.
