Heading back to school in Flagstaff can be pricey

Preteens race from shelf to shelf, comparing backpacks that are printed like pizza or tie-dyed orange, blue and purple as parents rifle through bins of crayons and markers, trying to find good values.

The scene in the back corner of the Target store is one of hundreds across the country as students prepare to return to school. Most schools in the Flagstaff Unified School District, as well as surrounding charters, begin classes in the first week of August.

With the back to school season comes back to school costs. A Deloitte study showed families were expecting to spend an average of $543 on back-to-school supplies for the 2015 school year.

In FUSD, the general school supplies wish list was released in late June, outlining the basics students will need by grade level. Individual teachers may require different materials, but the list can give parents a baseline of what to buy.
