Girls on the Run of Northern Arizona Site Registration Now Open

Girls on the Run of Northern Arizona is seeking sites to host the fall 2016 season. Girls on the Run is a physical-activity based, positive youth development (PA-PYD) program that inspires girls in 3rdthrough 8th grade to be joyful, healthy and confident. The volunteer-led program brings together groups of 8-15 girls for a 10-week season that encourages personal development, team building and connection to the community.

“Watching the girls in our program get to know themselves, share their uniqueness, and reach their goals is one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. You can clearly see the impact the program has in each girl, and in her school, family, and the community.” says Marney Babbitt, council director of Girls on the Run of Northern Arizona.

The program is hosted at schools, community centers, and any space where girls can gather and safely run laps outside. Last year, Girls on the Run was hosted at 18 locations throughout Northern Arizona. Each team will meet two times a week for 75-90 minutes either before or after school. The season will culminate in a celebratory 5k event that provides the girls with a tangible sense of accomplishment and shows them the power of pursuing their goals. More information about the program, becoming a site, and volunteering can be found on the Girls on the Run of Northern Arizona website at www.gotrna.orgor by calling 928-522-9452.

Along with encouraging girls to be healthy and active through training for a 5k event, Girls on the Run fosters key life skills including confidence, character, caring, connection and competence that are intended to last long past the season’s end. This is done through hands-on lessons and learning games that girls participate in throughout the season along with discussions and personal-reflection activities. Each team is led by trained volunteer coaches who create a positive, inclusive environment where girls feel comfortable to grow and share their insights and opinions. Girls in the program also learn the value of giving back to their community through a service project they complete during the season.

About Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program for 3rd-8th grade girls that has served over one million girls across the country. Participants develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care, create positive connections with peers and adults and make a meaningful contribution to community and society.
