FUSD spending in line with Arizona, far below national average

Flagstaff Unified School District’s administrative costs are relatively low compared to the state average despite higher spending in both classroom and non-classroom dollars.

Nationally, spending per pupil overall is $2,600 more than in FUSD.

But higher spending in Arizona does not always equal higher test scores, especially in higher poverty district such as FUSD.

According to the state auditor general’s Arizona School District Spending report for fiscal year 2014, FUSD spent $696 per pupil on administration, compared to a state average of $757 per pupil. While administrative costs accounted for 10 percent of education costs in Arizona’s public schools in FY 2014, FUSD’s administrative costs accounted for only 8.6 percent of district spending. The national average was 10.9 percent.
