FUSD: New Coding Program Engages Kindergartners

Last month was the kick off of a new Kindergarten Coding program put on by the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with FUSD. Kindergarten teacher Kelly Fischer hosted the inaugural program in her classroom for three 30 minute lessons.
For the first two days the kids worked through one hour of coding curriculum on iPads learning the basic principle of coding using algorithms and events to create simple lines of code and reactions. Students where excited and engaged throughout the three days and when faced with these new challenges overcame them with persistence and enthusiasm. On the final day they played unplugged (no iPads) games that reinforce what they have been learning. The program ended with each student receiving a certificate of completion and lots of high fives.
