Flagstaff Community STEM Celebration to be held April 1 at NAU Walkup Skydome

| March 23, 2015

FLAGSTAFF — Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) invites you to the second Flagstaff Community STEM Celebration from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1 at NAU’s J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome. Free event and parking.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is an important part of our community and FUSD is proud to facilitate this event bringing together all of Flagstaff’s public, charter and private schools for demonstrations of STEM learning and the businesses and agencies in Flagstaff that utilize STEM every day.

Sponsors of this event include APS, Suddenlink, Northern Arizona University (NAU) and Flagstaff STEM City. The Flagstaff Community STEM Celebration is a direct result of the efforts of Flagstaff Forty, community leaders and the proclamation by the Mayor and Flagstaff City Council to make Flagstaff the first STEM City in America.

Participants in this event will include; all K-12 schools in Flagstaff, Coconino Community College, NAU, STEM businesses and government entities. Each school will have two tables, one with a static display and one with an interactive activity.  There will be robotics demonstrations including Lego Robotics by elementary and middle schools, as well as the world famous CocoNuts. Businesses will have displays, activities, and the opportunity to talk to the community members in attendance.

The purpose of this event is to showcase STEM education and business in Flagstaff.  Through this event we hope to educate the community on the STEM emphasis not only in our schools at every level but the opportunities for students once they have graduated high school or college and are entering the workforce.

This year we expect to have all Flagstaff schools represented including STEM departments and programs from Coconino Community College and Northern Arizona University.  More than 70 businesses and government agencies will also be participating. The attendance for the event is expected to be very large; last year over 4000 visitors experienced this amazing event and our goal is to have at least 5,000 attendees this year.
