In the midst of an unparalleled presidential election, teachers have tried to navigate the importance of educating students about the process of selecting a president and avoiding the personal insults that have come this cycle.
Marisol Garcia, a middle school social studies teacher in Maricopa and vice president of the Arizona Education Association, said she generally assigns her students to watch the presidential debates as homework, but said this year, the debates have brought up issues teachers might be uncomfortable discussing. Garcia said talk about sexual assault, extramarital affairs and allegations of a rigged election have become dangerous territory for a teacher.
