Even though she graduated from CCC last year, April Winters returned to take classes in American Sign Language (ASL), which are not offered at Northern Arizona University.

“Since I’m going to be a teacher, I thought it might come in handy if I happen to have a student who’s deaf,” April said, adding that her boyfriend works with adults with disabilities at two different jobs and knows ASL.

Her goal is to become a middle-school English teacher. She worked as an instructional aide a few years ago and realized she loved teaching.

“I love that moment of ‘aha’ on a kid’s face when they really grasp something,” she said. “It’s better than Christmas morning, that feeling helping a kid.”

A mother of three, April realized that working in the retail industry wouldn’t pay her well enough to support her daughters after her divorce, so she approached CCC. It was cheaper, and she could transfer to a university when she was ready.
