Youth Expression

By the Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth

The Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth continues our monthly youth arts showcase. Do you know a youth that loves music, art, poetry, or any form of self-expression?  On the first Sunday of each month (next of Sept. 5) at 4 pm, youth from across Coconino County are welcomed into a virtual circle to EXPRESS THEMSELVES!

We began this opportunity to ensure youth were given a platform to share their thoughts, feelings, and talents while connecting to others. Visual and performing arts, such as traditional craft, sculpture, digital art, poetry, dance, film, singing, gardening, and the culinary arts, can have powerful and lasting effects on health. In addition, the arts can enable people to deal with anxiety, depression, and stress by flexing their “creative” muscles. The arts can also boost confidence and make us feel more engaged and resilient. Ultimately, getting involved in arts programs can support youth in expanding social relationships and support in their communities. While connecting with others can help alleviate loneliness and isolation.

This opportunity is open to all youth 12-24 years old in Coconino County. We begin each gathering by sharing One N Ten’s Safe Space Guidelines. Each youth then introduces themselves. Each participant is then given 5-10 minutes to share their art.  We pause after each “sharing” to allow time for positive feedback and group interaction. Finally, we close with a huge thank you and invitation to join us next month.

It is our intention to:

  • Ensure our showcase participants reflect the diversity of our County
  • Inspire young people to participate in the arts as an audience, participant, or performer
  • Create an outlet for young people’s stories to be shared
  • Promote positive community perceptions of young people

We encourage families, friends, schools, faith groups, and youth-serving organizations to share this opportunity with youth or groups of youth. In addition, we encourage supportive adults to join the Zoom with youth. We rely on you to connect us and ensure youth feel supported in joining the group!

How to register:

  • Youth can text Rene at 928.266.8006
  • Supportive adults can email rene@buildingcommunityflagstaff.com and provide a list of youth names. I will, in turn, email the meeting ID.

Please help us promote art as a tool to support youth in sharing their authentic selves in a safe community!
