The Coconino Coalition for Children & Youth received 3rd place in the non-profit category at NAU’s Civic Service Institute 2019 GEMS Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held April 11 at the High Country Conference Center in Flagstaff.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff received first place, with The Literacy Center receiving second place award at the third annual event.

The GEMS Volunteer Recognition Luncheon is held to recognize the “gems” in our community; the volunteers who shine above others and help make our community a better place in which to live, the institute reported.

Held during National Volunteer Week, GEMS offers the community the opportunity to nominate their most excellent volunteers for awards while also allowing for nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses, and the rest of the community to recognize them over a luncheon and awards ceremony.

“We are so honored to be a finalist in the non-profit category and place 3rd,” said Virginia Watahomigie, executive director of CCC&Y. “We congratulate finalists The Literacy Center (2nd) and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff (1st). We honor our board member, Andrea Meronuck (3rd) in the individual category for all the tremendous work and care she gives to this community. Congratulations to all the nominees and awardees that make such a wide network of volunteers and support!!”
