AzMERIT: Most Arizona students not ‘proficient’ in reading, math

Arizona standardized test results are in, and preliminary figures show most Arizona students are not proficient in math or reading.
Here are some samples of the unofficial results under the new Common Core standards:
In reading, 59 percent of third-graders were only “minimally” or “partially” proficient. Another 31 percent were “proficient.” Only 10 percent achieved the highest level of “highly proficient.”
In math, 67 percent of eighth-graders were “minimally” or “partially” proficient; 20 percent were “proficient.” About 13 percent of eighth-graders reached “highly proficient” scores.
