Arizona educators take the lead in mandated civics education

Arizona educators and civics advocates are taking the lead in teaching a new generation of Arizonans about American government at a time when research finds a lack of civic knowledge and engagement in the United States.

While civics/government requirements have been part of the state’s social studies standards for many years, this is the first year that Arizona high school seniors must pass a 100-question civics test to graduate. Most students will have learned the concepts in the exam by the end of eighth grade, according to a report from the Arizona Department of Education.
