STEM Learning in the Time of COVID-19
COVID-19 is impacting most of our lives and livelihoods at this point, with Arizona public school closures and locals on lockdown. If you’re program remains open, be sure to follow these latest recommendations from Arizona Department of Health Services to keep everyone safe and visit the AzCASE COVID-19 Resources Page for more information. If your program is currently closed, here’s a few STEM learning resources to share with the families you serve to keep their brains stimulated at home:
3 Resources for Connecting STEM Learning to COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic is a real world STEM learning opportunity for youth. Here are three resources for teaching youth about the virus while learning valuable STEM concepts:
1) NPR has created Just For Kids: A Comic Exploring the New Coronavirus to help demystify the virus and to teach children how to protect themselves.
2) Exploratorium has two simple science projects that break down the basics of a virus like COVID-19: [ACTIVITY] What Are Viruses? & [ACTIVITY] What Does Soap Do to Viruses?.
3) This PBS NOVA scienceNOW Activity explores the 1918 Flu Pandemic with a sequence of six short simulations to model how an infectious disease can spread through a human population.
Earth Day 2020 | The Party Must Go On!
April 22, 2020
Earth Day 2020 on April 22nd marks the 50th year of the movement. Given the current COVID-19 pandemic causing widespread event cancelations, the Earth Day movement made this statement: “Whether coronavirus or our global climate crisis, we cannot shut down. Instead, we shift our energies and efforts to new ways to mobilize the world to action. We are announcing the shift to global digital mobilizations for #EarthDay2020 and #EARTHRISE.”
