Spotlight on 2021 STEM Grantee

Topock Elementary School District – STEAM AHEAD Program

Earlier this year, AzCASE and Cox Communications awarded a 2021 STEM Grant to the Topock Elementary School District’s Summer STEAM AHEAD program.

Here’s what Topock Elementary School District Superintendent, John Warren, said about the impact of the grant:

“The campers of STEAM AHEAD used desktop 3D printers to recreate real objects utilizing their understanding of ratio and scale. The students examined real-world uses for their designs of technology and explored the 7-step design process to complete the projects. The second project that the students experienced in TES STEAM AHEAD was they built robots and solar powered vehicles to understand the build process from start to finish. They also were able to learn how the vehicles and robots operated and were able to make them work in just a little time. They learned mobile dynamics and the effects of wear, tear and the life of an object. The final project was the students involved art engineering where the students learned to form clay with measure and precise sculpting to form animals, cups and handprints. They were very specific with attention to detail and learned how to mold the clay with their bare hands.

We used the monies from this grant for many STEAM based projects and had so much fun in the process. The students ask to work on the machines that we purchased all the time and have taken an interest in more STEAM projects since camp!”

STEM Sports Equips Students for STEM Careers with Athletics

Repost from azcentral.com

Historically, it’s a no brainer. Survey kids and usually most of them will tell you they prefer a P.E. class over a math one.

When it comes to STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – education, those subjects tend to pale in popularity overall. Educators find students have more difficulty retaining those concepts, which are crucial in many daily applications and jobs.

If only there was a way to harness the approachability of sports and use it to make those subjects approachable as well.

Phoenix-based STEM Sports does just that. Since 2016, it has provided standards-aligned K-8 supplemental curricula that enhance students’ STEM skills with sports as real-life applications to teach those subjects.

We are looking for young people who represent future leaders, change-makers, and innovators in Arizona. These young people demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and leadership and are making our state a better place. Their skills and accomplishments are matched by few.

Winners will be receiving monetary prizes and will be featured by azcentral.com

The deadline for nominations is January 31, 2022.
