Arizona, Gov. Ducey Declare Lights On Afterschool Day:
Thursday October 22nd, 2020
On behalf of the State of Arizona, Govenor Doug Ducey encourages us all to find creative and innovative ways to keep our youth safe, engaged, and learning with a proclamation of Lights On Afterschool Day on Thursday October 22nd, 2020. This statement recognizes of the importance of quality out-of-school time programming for children, families, and communities.
Many afterschool programs are facing operating challenges due to the pandemic and funding gaps, some so detrimental they are being forced to close their doors. The State of Arizona is committed to investing in expanded learning opportunities during this challenging time.

This year, we’re kicking off Lights On Afterschool with a multi-state virtual Town Hall program to recognize out-of-school time! AzCASE is working with 10 other states to showcase how afterschool programs play a role in our communities and the impact they have on youth across the region from the voices of afterschool champions, our youth, and our partners and programs. Our goal is to continue to shine a light to the value of out-of-school time programming as a vital part of youth development. Tune in on the eve of Lights On, October 21st at 3 PM (MST), to check out our program. The Arizona Lights On Afterschool rally will take place immediately following. To recognize the many ways afterschool programs have risen to the moment this year for our communities, we are hosting the first-ever #LightsOnAfterschool Tweet Chat on October 22, from 1 – 2pm PT/MST. Afterschool networks, program providers, community members, family members, and afterschool champions across the country are invited to join the fun and tell their story of how afterschool programs have had an impact on them. Afterschool Alliance’s Lights On Afterschool Youth Town Hall
Join the Afterschool Alliance’s Lights On Afterschool Youth Town Hall and hear straight from youth of afterschool programs around the country to recognize the need to elevate, listen, and respond to youth voices in these uncertain times. On October 22nd at 3 PM (MST), they will be discussing what’s on their minds and the opportunities that youth need to thrive. Be a part of the first-ever virtual youth-led town hall and share in the nation’s largest celebration of out-of-school time. his special event will feature young leaders from the Alliance’s Afterschool Youth Ambassador program – creating a space for them to both share their own experiences and ask questions directly to leaders from the education, policy, and activism fields. The night will also include student performances and opportunities for youth and guests to interact with our speakers.
