White House hopes Phoenix robotics team inspires students

The White House announced Monday it wants to encourage more students to pursue science and engineering, partly by spreading the story of how four immigrant Phoenix high school students beat out colleges in an underwater robotics competition.

The Obama administration, in a news release, said that it secured commitments from two organizations to bring the documentary “Underwater Dreams,” which tells the story of Carl Hayden Community High School’s victory, to a wider audience.

The media company, Epix, in its own release, said it would make the film available for free on its website for a week, beginning on April 7.

Additionally, the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers will organize 150 screenings of the movie for students around the country, the release said.
