Meet new Fredonia-Moccasin School Superintendent Dr. Howard Hughes

Fredonia-Moccasin Unified School District is excited to welcome Dr. Howard Hughes as the new Superintendent and Elementary School Principal.

Dr. Hughes worked as a police officer while in college, and then earned his master’s degree in 2006 from the University of Phoenix, where he specialized in becoming a principal. He later earned his doctorate and took the superintendent exam in Arizona as well.

Outfitted with Amazon Fire tablets and knowledge of the Kaibab National Forest’s 2018 Citizen Science Project through the iNaturalist app, 16 students from Fredonia Elementary School wrapped up the school year with a day-trip roaming among the trees and open meadow at Pleasant Valley in the North Kaibab Ranger District of Kaibab National Forest, on May 17.

In a letter sent home to parents of Fredonia students, FMUSD states that: “No one at FMUSD wanted our students to be negatively impacted by a walk-out. All district employees are united in supporting more funding for public education in Arizona.

Two teenagers in Arizona have organized a protest in an effort to call for a change in gun laws, mental health education and school safety following last week’s deadly Florida high school shooting. 

Samantha Lekberg, a Willow Canyon High School student, and Jordan Harb, a student at Mountain View High School, are two of the organizers of the #MarchForOurLives in Phoenix.

The march is set to kick off at the Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix at 10 a.m. on March 24.

Homecoming week for Fredonia was filled with lots of fun activities this year. Tuesday was sci-fi day, and that night we had a community movie night and watched “Remember the Titans” in the gym. Wednesday was twin day and peach fuzz volleyball. Thursday was Blue and White Day. The parade was Thursday evening, followed by an Indian Taco Dinner. That night there was the bon-fire out at red hills.

Workforce Employability Seminar at Fredonia High School

The students at Fredonia High School had the opportunity to meet with leaders of the Fredonia, Kanab, Cedar City and St. George communities. On March 16, a Workforce Employability Seminar was held at Fredonia High School. Presenters from around the area came to talk to the students about workforce topics like goal setting, team building, personal finance, test taking strategies and communication.

Eighth Grader Sarah Duffield said, “I really enjoyed the session talking about resume writing and job interview skills that was presented by The Skin Institute. Mary Ronnow told us when you are in an interview you need to look through the employer’s eyes and let them know what you can do for them.”
