Rolling down the river: Grand Canyon Youth adds Verde to programs

Grand Canyon Youth is partnering with the Verde River Institute to bring more youth to Arizona rivers. The nonprofit organization has helped students, ages 10 to 19, from around the country learn about wildlife, rivers, ecology and team building through its programs on the Colorado and San Juan Rivers and trips to the Grand Canyon.

This year the organization added the Verde River as part of a pilot program with the Verde River Institute and Kinsey Inquiry and Discovery School, said GCY Executive Director Emma Wharton. Staff from GCY worked with fifth-grade teachers from Kinsey and VRI Executive Director Doug Von Gausig to create a day trip down the river that would incorporate what students were learning in the classroom about ecology and watersheds and give them a sense of curiosity about the world around them.
