Page Class of 2015 a resilient bunch

PAGE — Unseasonably cool weather became one final obstacle for the resilient Class of 2015 of Page High School Saturday night.

The 189-member class endured a road closure, a fire and a car crashing into a science classroom during its four-year run that was celebrated with a graduation ceremony on a chilly evening. Temperatures were in the mid-60s and a cold breeze blew in from the west at 14 miles an hour at Cyclone Field.

Beginning as sophomores, class members living on the Navajo Nation just east of the Colorado River endured a detour to school with the collapse of Highway 89 at Echo Cliffs. As juniors, the school’s main building was closed for months after a December 2013 fire, and before school one morning in August, a drunk driver plowed his car into the building.

Franz Sattler set in motion the theme of perseverance by coming to Page from Peru in the fifth grade with limited command of the English language. He went on to earn one of three co-valedictorian slots.
