NPA grad turns tragedy into triumph

When Northland Preparatory Academy senior Kayla Wilson receives her diploma today, she knows her family will be right there in the audience to cheer her on.

But there is one face she will not see in the crowd.

Wilson’s brother was killed by a drunk driver when she was a freshman in high school. Instead of letting the tragedy fill her with bitterness, she decided to open her heart.

“As hard as it was, it also kind of locked in my foundation and support system,” Wilson said. “I had been here (at NPA) for two years already, which was nice, but it helped me to realize the people that cared about me.”

Wilson is a Dorrance Scholarship recipient with a grade point average around 3.8. But where she really shines is in her community service.
