Update on the Grandparents Stipend
Yesterday the Senate unanimously passed SB 1346. This will  provide $1.5 million in funding and change the rules so that more grandparents would receive a $75 monthly stipend to help support the grandchildren they are raising. Grandparents would qualify for the stipend if they don’t receive any other financial assistance, their grandchildren were placed with them by court order (CPS or guardians), and their income is below 200% of the federal poverty level.

School Property; Leases; Immunity
SB 1336passed Senate Committee of the Whole (COW). This bill provides immunity from civil liability to school districts, district employees, and charters regarding the lease or use of school property. ASBA supports

Schools; Noncertificated Employees; Fingerprinting
SB 1391 passed, as amended, Senate COW. This bill requires additional employees and volunteers of charter schools to have fingerprint clearance cards, school districts to undergo criminal records checks and provides a five-year compliance period. The floor amendment clarifies that volunteers who are accompanied by people with fingerprint clearance cards are exempt from the requirement.

School Funding
HB 2521passed on a 7-2-1-1 vote. This bill allows individual schools and charter schools to offer 200-day calendars and increases base level funding under certain conditions for school districts, charter holders and D and F schools that offer an extended calendar. ASBA supports.
