This week marks the 50th anniversary of Medicaid and Arizona has many reasons to celebrate the program. Over the past 50 years, Medicaid has ensured that Arizona children have access to quality health care when they need it. Currently, two out of five children in Arizona are covered by AHCCCS (Arizona’s state Medicaid agency). That’s over 600,000 Arizona kids.

A recent study by Georgetown University shows that kids with coverage show up at school ready to learn, are more likely to graduate from college and end up with more earning potential as adults. This translates to a healthier, more productive, and stronger foundation for the future.

Medicaid has also shown itself to be an effective and cost-efficient program. Administrative costs are low and because children using Medicaid have access to preventative services, small issues can be addressed before they end up as big, costly illnesses.
